PENANG

RPEN-1A – Trishaw Ride in the Pearl of the Orient (includes lunch) SGD 80 (A) / 75 (C)
Trishaw ride. Go through an old section of Georgetown.
Clan piers. A Chinese Water Village built on stilts, extending out into the sea. This place is known as the Clan Piers because each of the jetties is named after a different Chinese clan. It is a residential area with a very strong community feel. Seven fisherfolk clans have lived here on the wooden jetties for generations. The properties here are also home to the hundreds of harbour workers and their families who can not move anywhere else because of the high cost of land.
  Lunch
Khoo Kongsi. This clan temple is probably the most celebrated historic attraction in Penang. "Khoo" is the name of the Chinese family clan, whilst "Kongsi" means partnership or a guild set up by immigrant Chinese groups. This temple seen here, was the 2nd to be built after the first was razed in a fire. It was built in 1906, and is a monument of Chuan Chew architecture, which is apparently more elaborate than anything built even in China of that period and style. This courtyard was used in a gripping execution scene in the 2000 movie "Anna and the King", starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yuen-Fatt.
Wat Chayamankalarm. This temple houses a large reclining Buddha.

Temple of the Azure Cloud. The architecture of the temple is a design commonly found in Southern China. Three-dimensional sculptures constructed using a technique known as Chien Nien (cut and paste) from shards of coloured porcelain decorate the roof. Legend has it that after the temple was built, snakes from the surrounding forest mysteriously appeared in the building. Sensing this phenomenon as a good omen, the monk immediately gave shelter to the snakes and allowed them to take up residence in the sacred halls. Until today snakes are still found in the temple, although in slightly lesser numbers than before due to the rapid development in this area.
